Twin Defeats for Woodstock in the Pre Season Openers
It was a disappointing day in terms of results as the two Woodstock teams were soundly beaten in their away games, 7-1 at Berinsfield and 5-0 at Aston Clinton.
Both teams bore no resemblance to how they are expected to start the season with the first team starting lineup containing 5 trialists and only 2 players over the age of 23 (including a 17 year old centre forward and a 45 year old centre half!). The Woodstock goal in the other game was scored by one of the substitute keepers which shows how experimental things got!!!
This was a day to get minutes into players legs and lungs as we move towards the start of the Hellenic season in the first couple of weeks of August. Every game is an opportunity to learn and the club and the players can take plenty of positives from aspects of the performances as well as reflecting on a day when perhaps some could’ve done more.
One piece of good news is that Ollie Hawkins, who was sidelined in a quite frankly disgusting horror challenge by the Aston Clinton keeper after only two minutes (think Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston in the 1982 World Cup Semi Final with even less intent to play the ball!!) Has a black eye and minor concussion but nothing more serious. One would hope that the Aston Clinton management would have a quiet word in the keepers ear.
Thanks to both host clubs for giving us a run out and an opportunity to test out a few things.
