Youth Sweep the Awards on Presentation Night

June 13, 2018

It was a busy and productive Saturday night at New Road as both men’s teams came together for their annual Awards and Race Night

With a packed clubhouse, the awards ceremony got underway during the halftime period in the race night.

It was a good night for the young players at the club and it is testament to the clubs policy of giving young players a chance to prove themselves in senior football that all the players to win awards were still in their teens.

Jordan Wyatt picked up the 1st team managers player of the season in his first year in men’s football. The young defender grew throughout the season and proved that he has the attitude and ability to do well in the men’s game. Having started off in the Reserves at the start of the season yesterday finish up as one of the most important 1st teamers is incredible for a player starting out in senior football.

Matty Crowther picked up the coveted players player award following some very impressive performances throughout the season.  Crowther has proven what a fine prospect he is and has all the signs of developing into one of the best keepers around given that he is already regarded as one of the best in the league and he is still so young.

It was a great night for Woodstock’s young keepers as Reserves 17 year old shot stopper Josh Cullen shared the managers player of the year award with 18 year old midfielder James Ward.

Ward, another player in his first season in the senior game was an important part of the Reserves team, battling and out competing players with far more muscle and experience. James displayed a great footballing brain and also chipped in with some important goals. Having also appeared in several first team games, James should be as proud of his first senior season as the club are of him.

Completing a great night for Josh Cullen, he also picked up the players player award for the Reserves. Josh has gained a reputation as a brilliant shot stopper and 1on1 specialist despite not yet being able to buy his own beer! He grew game on game throughout the season from a shy and timid keeper to very quickly be the commanding and brave keeper he is today and is rightly regarded (along with Matty Crowther) as one of the best young keepers in Oxfordshire.

There were special awards for Callum Rolfe and Matty Crowther who both represented the title winning Oxfordshire Under 18’s this season, showing that Woodstock Town have some of the best young players around and are willing to take a gamble on youth when some of our larger neighbours aren’t willing to take the same gamble.

The awards night shows that the future of Woodstock Town Football Club is very bright indeed.
